2 Sep 07: Condillac – The Worst Residence Ever?

After the two-and-a-half week whirlwind around Europe, we were to head back to Grenoble to attend classes! Kinda dreaded it cos felt like my brain was getting rusty due to the months of unintellectual pursuits before this. On the train to Grenoble, us Condillacians were trying to brace ourselves for what could potentially be an unpleasant welcome to Grenoble (due to this website we found in Singapore blasting its uninhabitable conditions).

Bienvenue à Condillac! Looks like some abandoned industrial building… haha.

The dreadful corridors

Thankfully, Andi who had reached Grenoble earlier, was there to orientate the newbies. We had to report to the admin staff to receive the keys to our room. She was incredibly accommodating! She saw that we were rather concerned about the conditions and cleanliness of the rooms so she offered us the option of returning to her if we found that the conditions of our room weren’t satisfactory. Mich and I were given adjacent rooms and said a silent prayer (haha really!) before opening the doors to our room. Mine was ok other than an annoyingly loud buzzing noise the table lamp made and some cracks and stains in the sink. Hers was quite terrible, the wallpaper was peeling and some of the floor tiles had chipped off. In the end, she found a much better room beside Shaowei in another block. A pretty good start for the both of us!

At night it was spring-cleaning time! Luckily Ma reminded me to bring rags and gloves cos the room was quite dusty. One swipe of the window turned my rag black (not exaggerating!) Spring-cleaning was quite fun actually. It’s satisfying wiping surfaces and finally seeing that the rag didn’t take a grayish or blackish hue. Haha.

One thing went wrong though. Realised that my camera’s lens got stuck because the zoom function was somehow activated when it was in my casing! Couldn’t seem to get it to work again so I couldn’t take the many pictures I had wanted to! Zut!
