Lynn and I agreed that walking in the Foro Romano this time, was a much more enjoyable experience than in summer when we last went. The scorching heat at that time was so unbearable that we could hardly appreciate the years of history this jewel entailed.

The Vatican City was swarming with tourists, not unexpectedly, given that it was the Xmas season. The two columned arches surrounding Piazza San Pietro, the papal apartments and of course the Basilica never ceased to impress.

As night fell, we ventured towards Piazza del Popolo, with its fountains, two churches and an obelisk. Before railways were built, this piazza would be the entry point for visitors travelling to Rome. It was also where public executions were carried out in the past.

Obviously, we had to stop at the Trevi Fountain for that classic coin-toss which would (fingers crossed) bring us back to Rome.
