28 Sep 07 - Sortie à la Bastille

It was barely the crack of dawn and it was raining yet again! So it was quite a task hauling myself out of bed with the cold literally biting into my bones.

When I stepped out of the residence at 7 am, the path towards the tram stop was dead quiet. If the weather had been fine, I'd probably have taken the time to take in the tranquility of it all but no such luck. So I was scurrying towards the tram stop, my legs feeling like two large blocks of ice. Was kinda like a boiling kettle spewing out dense clouds of mist as I exhaled. Haha.

Wouldn't wake up this early if I didn't have to meet my geology class for a field trip near the Bastille (a fortress built on top of this mountain in Grenoble)!

The whole excursion consisted of trekking up the mountain, each equipped with an umbrella or poncho and observing rock formations and trying to understand the tutor who was also our guide. I dare say I only understood 20% of what was being said! It was pretty torturous cos of the cold (it was the coldest day I'd experienced in Grenoble) and by the end of the excursion my nose was running and my fingers were reduced to icy stumps.

Headed down to the city centre at the foot of the mountain for warmth and much-needed shelter from the rain at this Kebap place (Kebap stalls are often the cheaper alternatives when it comes to food in Europe!) Hot, spicy food on a cold rainy day just feels like heaven =D

The city veiled in mist

Our guide talking about various rock formations which I totally understood (yeah right)

The only thing I remembered: the synclincal and anticlinal rock formations. This mountain must really be a haven for practicing geologists. The variety of formations we saw that day was quite an eye-opener.

Turkish delights at the Kebap place which looked too good to be eaten!
