24 Nov 07 - Saint Martin D'Uriage

The decision to go to Saint Martin D'Uriage was made only because the initial plan of making a trip to Nîmes didn't work out.

The most hilarious thing was that we had left our residence to the Gare Routière (about 30 minutes tram ride away) to take the bus for Uriage but we soon realised that the route the bus took took us past our residence, stopping at the familiar bus stop and that Uriage was at most a 15 minute drive away. Haha.

Andi relishing his pipping hot duck noodles on a cold morning in a Vietnamese restaurant near the Gare Routière.

The serene little village on a Saturday morning:

right: the wooden bridge that is the supposed landmark of the village. Bridges over running water bodies are really my kinda thing. For rivers or streams to be considered beautiful to Andi, they have to have rocks lining their banks (what??) hahaha.

We chanced upon two apple trees bearing the tiniest fruits ever! My first sighting of apples on trees! Delightful.

Amusing signs in the public park:

left: Here, I have to be leashed
right: Here, I can do as I please (I almost stepped on a piece doing that! haha)

Speaking of which, for such a small village, Uriage has 3 public toilets, which does come in handy sometimes. Haha.

Possibly the most eye-catching aspect of Uriage was a castle on top of a hill that looked like the stuff that fairytales are made off, although it was perpetually shrouded in mist.

The hike up was a challenging task, necessitating a good sense of balance (when u need to recover after slipping on wet leaves and algae). The winding path up to the top was probably constructed to deter possible trespassers and nosy tourists for the inclination of the slopes were meant to kill.

left: the treacherous trek
right: Le Château d'Uriage, which we were about to enter until we saw people exiting it with shopping bags and children in hand. On the entrance, instead of seeing the visiting hours and entrance fees, we saw the words 'propriété privée'. People were living there! My god! Totally turned green with envy!

The hike down was even more terrifying! I was literally taking it one step at a time. It wasn't easy doing it with wobbly knees but we made it down in the end without any embarrassing incidents to tell about. =D

Went back at about 15h30, taking away with us yet another haven in this beautiful country we call France.
